Abstract

King (1961) in his widely acclaimed work, Education, development and society, assets that as characterised as progressive, stable, cohesive, and just. The Ominde Education Commission of 1965 echoes similar sentiments in its recommendations on reforms of education in post-independence Kenya. The designed philosophy, Goals, Objectives and Values of the recommended education by this commission emphasised equity, equality, quality and easy access to education by all Kenyans. This development was aimed at the development and creation of the desired society in modern Kenya as aspired by the founding fathers of this nation. Further, this development was in line with the advocacies of the significant authorities in education of the role of education in the process of development and creation of society in modern world. This strategy is considered as the best approach to preparing and producing skilled manpower for development of modern Kenya. However, for same unclear reasons, the Kenyan government has failed to take advantage of this facility. Today, Kenyan society is one of the most chaotic societies on the African continents, the country is more divided than ever, and it is far less progressive than anticipated at independence. Therefore, this paper is designed to examine factors that have made modern Kenya fail to utilise education in the development and creation of the desired society. The paper is intended to respond to the question: “what went wrong?”
