Abstract
Despite sex education being taught in Kenyan secondary schools to deter sex activities among students, teen pregnancies and sexual infections are still rampant among the youth aged 15 to 29 years. Hence, the study aimed at assessing effectiveness of methods used by Christian Religious Education teachers to communicate responsible sexual behavior to students in selected secondary schools within Uasin Gishu County in Kenya. The study was informed by principles of participatory communication methodologies located within the theoretical framework of Freire (1970). The study adopted a descriptive survey design and mixed research approaches. The target population was 2760 students and 51 teachers of CRE in 29 secondary schools. The sample size was 807 students in 9 secondary schools. Stratified and purposive random sampling technique were used to identify schools where CRE was taught from forms one to four classes. Simple random sampling was used to identify CRE teachers in sampled classes. Questionnaires and observation checklists were used in collection of data which, was analyzed using SPSS Version 21. Findings revealed a moderate correlation between methods of communication and students’ sexual behavior (r = 0.540, ρ< 0.01). This suggests that the way in which CRE teachers convey messages about responsible sexual behavior can significantly influence students' actions and decisions regarding their sexual health. The study recommends more education of students on sexuality education and train of teachers on use of various methods.
