Abstract

Talent management is a critical aspect of human resource management that has gained increasing recognition for its role in fostering employee commitment and organizational success. The Kakamega County Government in Kenya, like many other public institutions, faces the challenge of attracting, retaining, and nurturing a committed and highly skilled workforce. The effectiveness of talent management practices within the county government has become a subject of concern, as it plays a pivotal role in ensuring employee commitment and, consequently, in improving the quality of public service delivery. Thus, the purpose of the study was to determine the influence of talent management practices on employee commitment in Kakamega county government in Kenya. The study was guided by social exchange theory and organizational theory and adopted the descriptive research design. The target population was 6266 employees working for the Kakamega county government in Kenya. The sample size of 361 respondents was determined using the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table formula. The method employed for sampling was stratified random sampling, and the data was gathered through the use of questionnaires and interview guides. The instruments were validated by the supervisors. The instruments' reliability was established through a pilot study, during which the Cronbach alpha coefficients were computed for talent management practices (0.77) and employee commitment (0.77). Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, thereafter, presented in tables. The study revealed that talent management practices (t =4.275, P<.05) significantly affected employee commitment in Kakamega county government in Kenya. It was concluded that talent management practices significantly influence employee commitment. The study recommends that government and other stakeholders focus more on considering talent management practices.
